The wind would give patterns & signals.
Old Capt. used his many years of experience, remembering the how the sailing was when the winds were similar and from which direction.
He used his observations and memory to plan a course on then Navigation Charts.
Seagull could just feel it in his blood.
Sometimes they agreed and sometimes they disagreed. Sometimes they were both wrong, but mostly, so far, they had been right.
But Capt. S S always had to think about "What if?" He always made a second plan for what to do if the first plan wasn't working out.
They both knew how dangerously powerful the wind could be. No matter what they thought tomorrow would bring, the weather could suddenly change. It could blow them off course for days, using up precious time and provisions.
